Ilfracombe Art Trail 2026 Map

There are some weekends in Ilfracombe that seem to capture the town at its very best, and the Ilfracombe Art Trail is one of them. For one spring weekend each year, the town opens up in a different way. Studios, galleries, homes and gardens become part of a shared creative map, inviting visitors to wander, explore and discover art in places that feel personal, characterful and full of surprise. In 2026, that sense of occasion feels even more special, with the trail marking its 10th anniversary on the weekend of 9 and 10 May, from 10am to 5pm.

The Art Trail Launch Event at The Carlton

Ahead of the main event, The Carlton is delighted to be hosting the official Art Trail Launch Evening on 24 April 2026, welcoming artists, invited guests and media for an evening that celebrates Ilfracombe’s thriving creative life. It is a fitting partnership. The Carlton has long supported local artists and has always recognised that art is part of what gives Ilfracombe its atmosphere, identity and charm. As Eliot Seabourn-Wren, co-owner of The Carlton, says, “Ilfracombe’s art scene is such an important part of what makes the town special, so we’re delighted to be hosting the launch of the 2026 Ilfracombe Art Trail at The Carlton. We’ve always loved showcasing local artists at the hotel, and it’s a pleasure to welcome guests and visitors for an evening that celebrates the creativity, character and community spirit of this wonderful place.”

Part of the appeal of the Ilfracombe Art Trail is that it is not a formal, intimidating art fair. The trail is an independent collaboration of artists, makers, galleries and gardens set in and around Ilfracombe, with most venues within an easy 20-minute walk of the High Street and a handful a short drive away in nearby Berrynarbor. That means visitors can shape the day in their own way. You might dip in for an hour, follow a handful of venues that catch your eye, or spend the entire weekend working your way from one creative space to the next.

A Memorable Way to Experience Art in Ilfracombe

What makes it so memorable is the sense of discovery. One moment you may find yourself in a gallery or open studio talking to an artist about their process. The next, you could be stepping into a tucked-away garden, a home filled with paintings, or a pop-up venue showcasing handmade pieces in an unexpected setting. The organisers describe it as a chance to discover something new at every stop, and that feels exactly right. The trail includes paintings, sculpture, jewellery, ceramics, textiles, photography, printmaking, leatherwork and more, with affordable work available to view and purchase across the weekend.

There is also something wonderfully local about the way the trail unfolds. As you follow the route, you also get to experience the hidden parts of Ilfracombe itself. You wander through Victorian streets, peek into hidden corners, move between harbourfront spaces and quieter residential spots, and experience the town through the eyes of the people who live and create there. The Art Trail provides a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, with many venues offering tea and cake and the town’s artisan cafés and eateries providing perfect stopping points between visits. It is easy to see why the event has become such a favourite with both residents and returning visitors.

For those who have never experienced an open studio before, that is part of the magic too. An open studio is exactly what it sounds like: a creative space where the artist welcomes visitors in, invites conversation and allows people to spend time with the work in a more human and informal setting. It is an opportunity for visitors to meet artists, ask questions, reflect on the artwork, and even hear about future exhibitions, events or courses. For the artists themselves, it is about building meaningful connections. That spirit of exchange is what sets the art trail apart from more conventional arts events.

10 Year Anniversary for Ilfracombe Art Trail

The 2026 trail is also significant because it marks a milestone year. The event is celebrating its 10th anniversary and continues to grow, welcoming increasing numbers of both artists and visitors. The Art Trail remains a non-profit initiative, run by a small committee and supported through participant fees and local backing, which gives it an independent, community-led feel. Rather than feeling glossy or over-produced, Ilfracombe Art Trail feels representative of the people and place that make it possible.

Book The Carlton’s Art Trail Weekend Stay

Paint & Sip with Jane Perrin

That sense of place is one of the reasons The Carlton is such a natural base for the weekend. For guests who would like more than a day trip, the hotel’s Art Trail Weekend Stay offers the chance to turn the event into a relaxed and immersive spring escape. Running from 8 to 10 May 2026 and priced from £269 per person, the break is designed as a hosted, small-group experience built around the rhythm of the Art Trail itself. It combines accommodation, artist-led workshops, shared meals and local insight, creating something that feels much more personal than simply booking a room and heading out with a map.

It is a carefully curated creative weekend for guests who are looking to experience something between a structured workshop retreat and a DIY artistic getaway. There is support and local knowledge behind it, but still plenty of room to explore at your own pace.

The weekend begins on Friday 8 May, when guests arrive in Ilfracombe and settle into The Carlton before supper in our Brasserie. That evening includes a Paint and Sip workshop hosted by local artist Jane Perrin, whose studio is just five minutes from the hotel on the way to the harbour. It is an inviting start to the weekend, offering guests the chance to do more than observe creativity from the outside and enjoy a hands-on artistic experience of their own.

Saturday begins with a freshly prepared breakfast before the Art Trail itself takes centre stage. One of the strengths of the package is that guests are not simply sent on their way with vague suggestions. The hotel helps with route planning and local guidance, matching the two-day exploration to each guest’s pace and interests. That thoughtful planning is especially appealing for first-time visitors, or for anyone who wants to make the most of the weekend without feeling rushed or overwhelmed by choice. With venues spread across the town, from harbourfront locations to tucked-away studios and pop-up spaces, having a little insider guidance can make all the difference.

Later on Saturday, guests return to The Carlton for a traditional Devon cream tea before taking part in “Through the Lens”, a hands-on pinhole camera workshop exclusive to Carlton guests. The day then concludes with dinner in the Brasserie.

Sunday offers one last chance for final discoveries. After another hot breakfast, guests can revisit favourite venues or catch those they did not quite manage to fit in on Saturday before heading home. For those who would like to extend the pleasure a little longer, Sunday lunch in the Brasserie is available as an optional extra. A weekend art stay at The Carlton allows art lovers, curious visitors and creative holidaymakers alike to enjoy the trail without the pressure of trying to cram everything into a single day.

Artist in Residence at The Carlton

Visitors to The Carlton during the Art Trail weekend will also have the chance to experience Duvessa by Ben Baker Martin, an immersive audiovisual installation combining film, ambient sound and spoken word. Exploring themes of identity, memory and the space between the natural and digital worlds, it adds another dimension to the Carlton’s Art Trail programme and offers guests and visitors something a little different to discover during the weekend. Duvessa will be on display at The Carlton on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 May from 11am to 3pm as a free drop-in experience.

An Art Event for Everyone

The great thing is, you do not need to be an artist to enjoy any of it. The weekend is ideal for anyone who is curious, open and happy to spend time in creative company. It is not only for collectors, makers or people with specialist knowledge. It is for anyone who enjoys beauty, conversation, craft and the pleasure of seeing a town come alive through the work of the people who make things there.
In many ways, the Art Trail offers the perfect lens through which to experience Ilfracombe. It combines the colour and energy of the town’s creative community with the pleasure of wandering by the sea, discovering independent spaces, meeting local people and finding inspiration around unexpected corners.

With the 2026 trail celebrating its 10th anniversary, this feels like the perfect year to visit. Whether you join us for the official launch at The Carlton on 24 April, book the Art Trail Weekend Stay from 8 to 10 May, or simply come along for a day of open studios and creative discovery on 9 and 10 May, Ilfracombe will be ready to welcome you. And for one very special weekend, art will be everywhere.
