Fresh food, locally sourced

The Brasserie at The Carlton is the perfect setting to enjoy a meal, freshly prepared in our kitchen using some of the best local produce around. We are open to hotel guests and non-residents (please see our covid guidelines below). Brasserie is a French term referring to an establishment where the food is good, but simple and served in a relaxed setting, which typifies the ambience of our in-house restaurant.

We serve an informal dinner menu seven days a week, with a lighter all day and lounge menu to complement our dinner offer.

With provenance

We love to find new suppliers, whether they’re Devon families who’ve been growing, rearing or selling produce for generations or new, artisan makers of craft food and drink products – of which there are many in the county. We were thrilled to discover Justin of the Madrigal Brewery over in Lynmouth and his bespoke craft beers; Tony the Butcher, who works out of Muddiford for consistent West Country meat; Farmer Bob from Barnstaple, and seasonal local vegetables from Broadlands Farm Braunton.

North Devon’s larder

Naturally fish and seafood are key ingredients in our larder. You are guaranteed to enjoy some of the best fresh fish from the market at Appledore.  Why? Simply because this is where our fishmonger goes each day, and in turn returns to our kitchen, with quality produce landed off local day boats. Add to that. mussels that are picked at low tide in Westward Ho! then cleaned in Instow. All in all a great basket of local and seasonal ingredients that are truly sustainable.

Menus adapt to the seasons, so there’s always something new to try whatever time of year you arrive!

Open to non-residents

We are open to locals and visitors, with prior reservation. At the moment we are unable to accept guests without a reservation.  Please be aware you will be asked to give us complete contact details, a requirement of eating and drinking out as part of the government’s Track & Trace regime.

Sunday lunch

Sunday lunch is a weekly Carlton highlight, leaving you ready for a countryside walk, or armchair snooze, and the well-stocked bar is always available for a chilled-out drink or to sample something from our carefully curated wine list.  Our Sunday Lunch menu always includes a classic roast (usually West Country sirloin and one other) plus fish, vegetarian and vegan options.

Opening times

Breakfast is served daily from 7.30am (8am at weekends), room service options exist. Dinner is served from 6.30pm, and our kitchen opens even earlier during the summer months. An all-day menu is available, and also room service.

Safe dining at The Carlton

Yours and our safety

We are passionate about safety. The safety of you and our team. So behind the scenes (and in front) you’ll be comforted to know we are cleaning touch points, high traffic areas and frequently disinfecting your dining area to combat the virus better. Our procedures in working safely are assured by Visit England and the AA and reflected in our 5* food and hygiene safety rating  from the local authority.

Our key changes include: Dining in our Brasserie will feel a little different with a revised menu, suited to working in a new way, but retaining our guest favourites of course. Service will be limited to booked guests only, we won’t be able to seat you without a reservation. Reservations can be made ahead of arrival or at front desk, via email, phone or during your stay.

Please make use of our online and digital app*. This is designed to remove paper information and menus, and to avoid leaving your seat to place an order. You can order food to be delivered in to your bedroom if you prefer and if is possible to serve this to you. We also offer breakfast boxes and take-away dining boxed meals that can be delivered to your door.

Our staff training has been augmented, and the team may be wearing face coverings whilst helping you and other guests. At entry and exit points to the building, and at entry to the lift, we have installed sanitiser dispensers. Please use these.

All dining options are plated, no buffet service is offered.  We have spacious seating in our Stage and Brasserie rooms to permit distancing. Menu’s are either laminated or online or we’ll tell you what we can offer. There is still the personal touch to be enjoyed at The Carlton.

Be reassured we are doing this for everyone’s safety. We are offering in room dining where this is feasible to our overnight guests. Our Deli boxes are ideal for breakfast, lunch and dinner and can be ordered to enjoy in your room or take away outside.
