Afternoon Tea for a Celebration
Afternoon Tea at The Carlton is great for celebrations and perfect for a treat all year round. Events like hen parties, baby showers, birthdays or anniversaries, where you can invite family, friends and colleagues to tea in the relaxed atmosphere of our Brasserie. Of course, afteternoon tea is a quintessential English treat. Introduced to the good folk of England by Anna, the peckish Duchess of Bedford, in the 1840’s. A way of bridging the gap in meals between lunch and dinner.
Today you can join us at The Carlton for a delicious homemade afternoon tea with the classic Devonshire element, where the cream goes on first, of course. And just like Anna you’ll leave satisfied and full of our complete Afternoon Tea offer.
We are pleased to be able to offer gluten free, vegan and plant free alternatives subject to a minimum number.
Extensive Menu
There are five key elements to our Afternoon Tea menu. A choice of freshly prepared, hand cut sandwiches, your choice in savoury treats, like mini apple and pork sausage rolls or two cheese and tomato tartlet, plus a trio of cakes or sweet pastries, with a mini dessert, all served with a selection of Somerset blended teas, or filter coffee, which is roasted right here in Ilfracombe.
Our Afternoon Tea menu is £29 per person, and for larger tables we can offer a discount.
Gluten-Free Dining Options
With prior notice we can modify our offer for a coeliac and gluten free diet.
Please let us know beforehand and we’ll ensure you can experience the majority of our menu.
Vegan plant-based Afternoon Tea in North Devon
Our menu can be adapted to a plant based vegan diet. We need a little more notice, so please allow 36 hours before dining.
Devon Cream Tea
If you are looking for a more modest experience order one of our Devon Cream Teas. With hand made fruit scones, clotted cream and a choice in jam, to be enjoyed with a refreshing cup of Somerset blended tea or coffee of your choice.
Our Devon Cream tea is £9 per person. And for £12 you can add a selection of cakes. Please ask us for further information.
Spacious Surroundings
On warm days our French doors are open, and you can take Afternoon Tea in our airy Brasserie or one of our lounge areas. You can also choose to have Tea on our terrace, weather permitting, or our library for a cosier afternoon tea experience.
Times, guidance, booking
Our celebration Afternoon Tea is served from 3pm every day except Sunday. We ask that you vacate your table by 5:30pm to allow us to set for dinner guests.
Group bookings may be eligible for a discount on the price per person. We can also offer a private area for groups, and the opportunity to decorate the room for special events.

Ladies that get together once a month went for afternoon high tea at the Carlton. Wow what a fantastic selection of sandwiches cakes, scones and deserts. All served in a private cosy room. So much food and such a great selection we had to take the remainder home in doggy bags. Thank you Eliot.
The Brasserie
