BOOK YOUR WINE WEEKEND
A wine weekend made in North Devon
Just a few miles from Ilfracombe, Venn Valley Vineyard sits in the countryside at Landkey near Barnstaple. Here, Alina and Tony are creating distinctive wines while caring for the soil, wildlife and wider vineyard environment.
During your visit, you will explore the vineyard, hear the story behind its development and learn how its grapes are grown and turned into wine. Naturally, there will also be an opportunity to taste the results.
Back at The Carlton, the experience continues through our chef-led menus, prepared using seasonal ingredients and produce from North Devon and the wider South West.
This is not a formal wine course. It is an intimate and enjoyable weekend for anyone who appreciates good food, interesting wine and the stories behind both.
Your wine weekend itinerary
Friday 21 August – Arrival and dinner
Arrive at The Carlton and settle into your room before enjoying a freshly prepared three-course dinner in The Brasserie.
It is a relaxed opening to the weekend and an opportunity to begin discovering the local ingredients and flavours that shape our menus.
Saturday 22 August – Vineyard tour and Winemaker’s Supper
After a cooked-to-order breakfast, travel to Venn Valley Vineyard for an exclusive guided visit.
Explore the vines, learn about the growing and winemaking process, and discover how North Devon’s landscape and climate influence the finished wines. Your visit includes a tasting of selected Venn Valley wines.
On Saturday evening, return to The Carlton for the highlight of the weekend: our four-course Winemaker’s Supper.
Each course will be paired with a carefully selected wine, with the winemakers sharing the story behind the wines and explaining why each pairing works.
Sunday 23 August – A leisurely departure
Enjoy another freshly prepared breakfast before checking out and continuing your North Devon weekend—or simply making your way home.

Meet the Wine Makers – Alina
Alina studied Geography at Plymouth University, where she met Tony. Her interest in environmental science and horticulture eventually drew her away from desk-based work and towards a life outdoors.
After studying the principles of vine growing at Plumpton College, she found the site that would become Venn Valley Vineyard. Today, her approach brings together viticulture, sustainability, soil health and a genuine enthusiasm for working with the land.
Tony
A Chartered Mechanical Engineer, Tony has worked internationally across the oil and gas, water, marine and search-and-rescue sectors.
His career included leading the development of the RNLI’s first inshore rescue hovercraft. At Venn Valley, that wealth of practical and engineering experience is now helping Alina develop the vineyard and its many ongoing projects.
Together, they offer a warm and engaging introduction to the opportunities—and occasional challenges—of producing wine in North Devon. Venn Valley Vineyard
