With sunny summer days in mind, we\u2019ve put together our list of our favourite picnic spots in North Devon. \u00a0Each location has been tried, tested and enjoyed by at least one of the team here at The Carlton Hotel. \u00a0This means that we can be absolutely sure we\u2019re recommending only truly breathtaking destinations for you to enjoy at the height of summer.<\/p>\n

The South West Coast Path<\/h2>\n

Here in Ilfracombe we are perfectly positioned on the South West Coast Path.\u00a0 Exploring the path is easy as we nestle between the Atlantic coast and Exmoor National Park. With dramatic sea views to one side and vast rolling countryside to the other.<\/p>\n

Now, what better picnic spots in North Devon than the beautiful sunny stops along the South West Coast Path<\/a>?<\/p>\n

Leave The Carlton Hotel in the morning, with your picnic being made fresh from our Deli<\/a>. Walk in whichever direction takes your fancy. \u00a0Be adventurous and get slightly off the beaten path and you are sure to find the perfect secret spot.<\/p>\n

Bicclescombe Park<\/h2>\n

Beautiful Bicclescombe Park is but a mile away from Ilfracombe town centre. \u00a0Well worth the stroll, it\u2019s situated at the bottom of a valley with Wilderbrook stream trickling through. Big trees with plenty of sahde will offer respite from the midday summer heat.<\/p>\n

For those who want to enjoy their picnic as part of a day out, Bicclescombe is an excellent choice. \u00a0Within the grounds are beautiful planted boarders, boat lake, duck pond, mill leat and wheel, tennis courts, play area and sensory garden. There’s even a millers wheel and cafe to explore.<\/p>\n

It’s a green flag<\/a> rated park with adventure playground included next to the tennis courts.<\/p>\n

Relax with a picnic by the stream and enjoy the calming water running by.<\/p>\n

Capstone Hill<\/h2>\n

Capstone Hill offers beautiful scenery perfect for any picnic. \u00a0It is situated between Ilfracombe Harbour and the Landmark Theatre. \u00a0We love it, even on the chilliest of day it\u2019s worth getting out to enjoy. Andi the past two yeasr we are convinced that there have been more sightings of porpoises and dolpins than before.<\/p>\n

For guests who love walking, Capstone Hill forms part of the South West Coast Path \u2013 yes we\u2019ve already mentioned the coast path, but our list just wouldn\u2019t be complete without Capstone Hill!<\/p>\n

Local tip: enjoy Capstone Hill at sunset for the perfect picnic with a view!<\/p>\n

Tunnels Beaches<\/h2>\n

Tunnels Beaches is a truly stunning picnic spot in North Devon.<\/p>\n

With a unique walk through the tunnels, rugged coastal scenery, a beach to enjoy and the Atlantic Ocean to dip your feet in\u2026 Tunnels Beaches will mark itself in your memory.<\/p>\n

Local tip: Tunnels Beaches is rich in wildlife, it\u2019s worth bringing the binoculars.<\/p>\n

Hillsborough<\/h2>\n

This high ground has spectacular views over the harbour to the West and Hele to the East. With shaded parts and cuttings with seats to stop and relax. It is well known as the “sleeping elephant” becsue of its shape when viewed from Verity in Ilfracombe harbour. It is part of our local biosphere. It is the site of an Iron Age for<\/a>t, the oultine wcan still be seen.<\/p>\n
